Manuscript Found in Accra by Paulo Coelho

I picked up Paulo Coelho’s The Manuscript Found in Accra off the shelf just to tick a box. You know, so I can one day say I’ve read all of Paulo Coelho’s books just because. I remember my first thought was, is this actually based off a real manuscript or what? and made a mental note to google that later.

Is the Manuscript Found in Accra real?

The Manuscript Found in Accra is based on facts, inspired by a real historical manuscript discovered in Accra, Ghana. The manuscript, found in 1974 by an English archaeologist, Sir Walter Wilkinson dates back to 1307. It describes a meeting in 1099 AD between the people of Jerusalem and a sage who they referred to as the Copt.

The real manuscript, was written in Arabic, Hebrew, and Latin. Even more so intriguing, is that despite being found in Accra contained details about a historical event in Jerusalem. This unusual connection, cross-cultural and historical link adds a layer of mystery and depth to the narrative.

Plot and Structure

Coelho brings to life the reality of people in Jerusalem, on July 14, 1099. As the city braces for invasion by Crusaders, a diverse group of citizens-Jews, Muslims, and Christians-gather around a mysterious Greek sage “the Copt.” Instead of focusing on the impending siege, the Copt encourages the them to ask questions about life; love, defeat, anxiety, loyalty, and more. Each chapter centers on a single question, followed by the Copt’s poetic and philosophical response, which is then transcribed.

You’d be amazed at just how much this manuscript, over 700 years old, still speaks so clearly to our lives today. Wisdom truly is timeless.

This book stands apart from Coelho’s previous works, such as The Alchemist. As it doesn’t offer a traditional narrative, but a collection of philosophical reflections presented in a unique question-and-answer format.

The book’s structure allows readers to dip into any section and find insights relevant to their own lives, making it both accessible and deeply reflective.

My Favourite Quote

The great wisdom of life is to realize that we can be the masters of the things that try to enslave us.

Will I love this book?

Maybe, maybe not. This book is like that one song by famous artists whose lyrical genius often flies under the mainstream radar but deeply connects with true fans. The Manuscript Found in Accra is most probably ideal for readers who appreciate philosophical musings, spiritual wisdom and reflective literature.
